The Workspace Design and Safety symposium held at the UST College of Engineering Conference Room last August 5 was well attended. A little more than a 100 students and industry people listened to the presentations of Dr. Caloy Lugay of UST and Prof. Jazmin Tangsoc of DLSU. Tangsoc presented her research on designing a patient room in a certain hospital while Lugay presented his dissertation on Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSD).

An Ergonomic Evaluation of a Philippine Hospital Patient Room

In this presentation, a hospital patient room was ergonomically assessed. The methodology included layout analysis, anthropometry, postural and workstation analysis, and measurement of the physical environment. The main objective of the study is to propose a patient room design for a hospital with regard to standard ergonomic requirements on space, safety, comfort and satisfaction. Evaluation results showed that there are non-compliance to ergonomic standards in terms of space and physical environment, thus compromising the comfort, satisfaction, and safety of patients and nurses alike. Ergonomic standards are not only relevant to manufacturing applications but also to health care application. It is important to incorporate ergonomics in health care for patient room design to ensure patient safety and comfort as well as the nurse welfare.
Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders in the Philippine Garments Industry

In this research, one of the more common problems among sewing machine operators known as Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) was investigated. These disorders are reflected in the frequency and severity of the pain experienced by the sewing machine operators. The causes were identified and correlated with the frequency and severity of pain in various body areas of the operator. The study determined the possibility of a correlation between the pain level that an operator experiences while doing the sewing task and the break time the same operator takes to relieve himself of the pain. Results showed that pain level has a significant relationship with the ff: type of break time preferred, gender, degree of difficulty of sewing task and worker empowerment. On the other hand, pain level and break time do not have a significant relationship.
